What is “Free Expression at UW–Madison?”
The Free Expression at UW–Madison program details concepts such as civil discourse, academic freedom, offensive speech, and protest in the context of First Amendment rights as a campus community member.
How to Get Started
- Go to canvas.wisc.edu and sign on with your NetID and password.
- Select the “Courses” tab
- Click on Free Expression at UW–Madison Spring 2025 to access.
- You may login and out at the end of each section. Section ends are marked with a “Next” button.
- Important: Do not log out until you click the “Next” button or you will have to repeat the previous section.
- To log back into your account, always access Free Expression at UW–Madison from Canvas and follow steps 2 and 3.
Deadlines
Students will receive a message in their Canvas account to let them know Free Expression at UW–Madison is available and provide details on how to access the program.
Part 1 opens on Tuesday, January 7, 2025 and must completed by Wednesday, January 22, 2025. The program will take approximately 60 minutes to complete.

Who has to take the program?
All incoming degree-seeking undergraduate students, including first-year and transfer students, must complete the online Free Expression at UW–Madison program.
When do I need to have the program completed?
The program must be completed by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
It says the program is required. What does that mean?
Free Expression at UW–Madison is one of four required programs for all incoming degree-seeking undergraduate students, including first-year and transfer students. This includes AlcoholEdu, Our Wisconsin, and U Got This!.
Failure to complete the Free Expression at UW–Madison program will result in a hold on your academic record, preventing timely registration the following semester. You will not be permitted to register for the next term until you complete Free Expression at UW–Madison.
How are you tracking who has completed the program?
Incoming degree-seeking undergraduate first-year and transfer students will be auto-enrolled to the Free Expression at UW–Madison program in Canvas, which will track students’ progress and completion of the course.

Finished Free Expression at UW–Madison, but it’s not marked as complete in Canvas?
- Open the program and click, “Continue”
- When it says, “Thank you! You have already completed this survey. Please click below to continue.” Click “Done”
- Click the play button on the screen to finish the remainder of the course. (Some surveys may have a video at the end, others do not).
For all other technical difficulties with Free Expression at UW–Madison, try the following:
- Use an alternate browser.
- Refresh the screen two to three times from within the course.
- Close all browser windows and try logging into the course again.
